On June 14th, world-top material scientist, honorary professor of our university Rodney S. Ruoff showed on the 8th HuangDao Forum, giving us a report named by Graphene Based New Carbon Materials Applied in Energy and Fuel Field.

Professor Rodney introduced background and significance in research related to graphene based new carbon material used in energy and fuel field, meanwhile, he also presented their group’s study progress on high quality graphene which based on tinsel and diamond film.

Rodney pointed out that, fullerenecarbon fibercarbon nano tubesgraphenegraphdiyne, those carbon materials based on carbon element, make carbon material science becoming a national wide research hot spot, and lead the development of many other subject, such as: chemical engineering, energy storage, environment protection and some other relevant discipline. Diamond film is a promising material which has both diamond and graphite features at the same time, but how to produce it mildly and in large scale is still a difficulty. Considering that reaction products are determined by the quality of catalyst, prof. Rodney group is working on manufacturing large-scale and high quality graphene film and diamond film which based on single crystal foil as substrate.

Prof. Rodney gave us a detailed introduction about research situation on graphene growth based on (111) crystal face of single crystal copper foil, and how to produce (111) crystal face single crystal copper foil in large scale, how to produce (111) crystal face single crystal nickelcobalt foilplatinum foil. Meanwhile, he presented some their research achievement on high quality graphene and the method to transfer it, the achievement on how to .grow graphene on singal cryatal copper and copper nickel alloy. He also put forward that it is available to transfer graphene film into diamond film by metal-carbon interaction on platinum foil.

Prof. Rodney group found that starting by polymerizing chloroform, then remove halogen by transforming C-Cl to C-C with iodide samarium, to produce diamond film by sole contained sp3 hybrid carbon atom high polymer precusor(PHC) is available. PHC, a kind of material having hyperbranched structure which only contain C-H,C-C bond, by pyrolyzing PHC, diamond film can be obtained. At last, he also shared where this idea came from and some research progress on it. After the report, prof. Rodney answered some questions raised by Prof. Mingbo Wu and prof. Qingshan Niu, and they have a deep discussion on the issue.

Rodney S. Ruoff, world top material scientist, honorary professor for China University of Petroleum(East China). Before 2014, he was material engineering professor of University of Texas at Austin. Now, he has been introduced to Yonshan National University of Science and Technology of South Korea(UNIST), and he also holds the post of director in Center for Multidimensional Carbon Materials which is a branch of Korea Basic Science Institute.

Prof. Rodney has great knowledge in material science, especially in nano carbon materials. Over 20 essays have been accepted byseries publications of Nature and Science. In addition, he has published more than 440 essays, covering chemistry, physics, material science, mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering. He also has been elected as one of the 100 world top material scientists by Thomson Reuters.
