Various reactions have been directly observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). For example, heating and tensile tests conducted in the field of metallurgy are utilized as evaluation methods at the micron level. The investigation of direct observation methods for chemical reactions using SEM has also progressed. In our research group, we have developed and explored applications for a direct observation method of redox reactions. Figure 1 shows the Cu mesh before and after heating to 400°C with the introduction of air, which oxidized the surface, resulting in changes to the surface structure. Figure 2 illustrates the reduction of the copper oxide surface using hydrogen, capturing the growth of very fine wires as the hydrogen reduction progresses. In the presentation, we will discuss the methodologies of redox reactions and their applications.
